EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RECREATION, TOURISM AND BIOSECURITY IN AUSTRALIA’S SNOWY MOUNTAINS

This project explores the relationship between recreation-tourism and plant biosecurity practice in the NSW Snowy Mountains region, Australia. The project has 2 phases of data collection.

Phase One

Investigated self-selected sample of outdoor recreation people who resided or visited the region in summer and autumn 2022.

Phase two

Investigate in-depth the practices of a range of stakeholders associated with recreation planning, trail design and planning, licencing of activities, hire of equipment and different recreation activities. Will use interviews and related methods during summer and autumn 2023.

Research benefit

The knowledge gained from the research will benefit participants and the wider community by providing information on what enables and constrains biosecurity practices specific to the Kosciuszko Snowy-Monaro Region. This will contribute to enhancing management of the environment and tourism values of the region.

The research is being undertaken by Jen Smart, PhD student with the University of Wollongong, School of Geography and Sustainable Communities.
